So I know that I don’t lead a very exciting life – but am I the only one to find the witnessing of an arrest exciting? As we speak, a lady is moaning in a melodramatic way across the road from our office window and I have become addicted to peering out there to check what’s going on.
To set the scene…
It is a grey day, clouds are welling in the sky, it looks set to rain at any given moment. The mean streets are looking ever more mean by the darkening minute. Suddenly, a shout rings out, followed by panicked, running footsteps. Two, highly suspicious looking men run down the passage across the road, making a bid for freedom, followed by some burly, muscle-bound police officers.
The thieves are quick, but are no contest for the toned officers, at the peak of their physical fitness. Making fast ground, the officer catches up with the thieves. There is an almighty struggle, but the officers are victorious. As the criminals bemoan their capture, they are bundled into a waiting van.
Another criminal off the streets.
Erm… yes, ok, maybe I did embellish the story a little. Ok, ok, fine, so the real story reads rather less like a Mills and Boon Romance. Fine. If you’re going to be like that, I’ll tell you the truth. But don’t say I didn’t warn you that it’s not as exciting.
It does actually look like it is going to rain. But I guess even I can’t pretend that the streets of Cambridge can be described as “mean”. There was a yell, but I wasn’t quite quick enough to see the crims running off. However when a crowd formed, I did join it, to witness the police catching up with the pregnant woman who couldn’t run fast enough to keep up with the two men she had been with. And yes, the police officer did look like he’d had one too many donuts with this morning’s cup of tea. God – what’s you’re problem – why are you making me do this? Hmmm? What’s wrong with a bit of poetic license? And the pregnant lady did moan as they cuffed her. (See –there is a certain amount of drama in the real story – and she was put in a van when it finally arrived several minutes later).
AND there are still rozzers patrolling the streets in great numbers (two). So I defy you to find this story unexciting.
