The Case of the Ghostly Phone Call

For more posts and updates, click here.

This morning I was down in the prison cells washing up (erm... don't ask - this is what my new job has got me doing...). I had just been upstairs to collect more dirty cups when I heard a phone ringing. Seems normal enough so far, eh? Well then let me give you a little info on the prison cells. They are underneath what used to be the Old Crown Court. This stopped functioning as a Court about two years ago, since which, the prison cells have not been used.

There has been a court/prison cells here since medieval times. Being in the basement, when all the lights are off, it is pretty much pitch black. The cells are said to be haunted. None of us have actually seen anything. There have been a few funny noises (which for the most part can be rationally explained) and there's a filing cabinet down there that my colleague swears moves itself away from the wall - again - dubious.

Now, the phone down there is no longer in use - and listen, if you're in pitch black, haunted prison cells on your own and the phone's ringing - are you going to answer it? No thought not. That's the kind of thing horror movies are made of, and frankly, much as I am dedicated to my new job, I have no desire to be the main character in our own little horror movie.

So upon my return upstairs, I did the obvious thing and consulted Nancy (Drew). Believe it or not, Nancy's advice was this:

"Adventure can make you hungry! Pack a hearty snack."

So I have spent this afternoon gorging self on curry and massive chocolate brownie. Astonishingly, this has done exactly the trick. I feel much better. Nancy is so sensible. And always right. Particularly when talking in reference to hearty snacks.
