The Proper Way to Sift Junk

Ten Step process for going through collected stuff.

Step 1 – know your boredom threshold (mine is fairly low)
Step 2 – decide on how much you can get through before you get bored
Step 3 – make space. This is an important point. You will need sufficient space for several piles. Plus two additional required piles.
Step 4 – place stuff at side of cleared space
Step 5 – start going through stuff one item at a time. Be careful not to become distracted by more interesting looking items
Step 6 – assign each item to a pile – piles may vary slightly, but generally will consist of something similar to this:
  • Give to charity
  • Give to sibling
  • Give to friend
  • Give to freecycle
  • Give another chance
  • Undecided
  • God only knows

Step 7 – put piles in bags (bear in mind, if you got bored before you addressed all issues, you should still put the rationalised stuff into a smaller bag – because then you will receive a warm glow commonly known as a sense of achievement)
Step 8 – distribute bags

So I said there were ten steps, but this is all about clearing out junk, eh – so I cleared out two points I didn’t think were entirely necessary – you see how easy it is?

(Yes, alright, so really I wrote that it was a ten step process before I had any idea how many steps there were - but if I don't tell you that, it seems like a good example of putting the steps into action, doesn't it.)
