Last night, I went to see the stars through a massive telescope. It was dead cool. This takes place at the Institute of Astronomy – they do open viewings every Wednesday at 7.15 – first you have a 30 minute “talk”, then you head out to see the stars. It is clear that most people are only there for the telescopes, however you have to sit through this talk before you can do that – i.e. feign interest.
Now, I was genuinely interested, however the talk was on Radio Galaxies – something I’d never even heard of, never mind know anything about, so I did try to be interested – however found myself gently falling asleep at the back of the lecture theatre as the lady giving the talk started talking about statistics. Which I know is rude (and rather reminded me of my university days), however not as rude as the family who blatantly walked out half way through, who we could all then see racing about the corridors making a racket through the big window in the lecture theatre.
Anyway, after said talk, we all trooped out to the telescopes – where we saw the craters on the moon, Venus, Saturn and her two rings and some other stuff that I can’t remember the name of. Very cool.
Am now considering doing a basics in Astronomy course just so that I can get to peer through the telescopes in an excited manner for several weeks over.
