I have a day off today, so I am treating the kitchen floor. Not the nice kind of treat - but as far as I know, kitchen floors are not that bothered about gin and cake, so I think it will forgive me. I have purchased a bottle of what I'm certain is a concoction of highly dangerous chemicals - Paint and Varnish Stripper.
You are only allowed to treat an area of no more than 50cm squared in one go, you must ensure the area is well ventilated, must wear protective gloves and must not look at it for longer than three minutes in one go, or it will laser your eyes out. (One of those cautions may be rather exaggerated. Made up, even).
Slop it on with an appropriate paint brush - I don't know what an appropriate paint brush is - and could only find one paint brush - so if what they mean by appropriate is "handy", I am fully complying. It is a very viscous, jelly-like, white liquid. I'll leave you to imagine that for a moment and draw your own comparisons.
Now I have to wait 30 minutes for it to work its magic, and hopefully what I will end up with is tiles free from the paint and lino glue that has been adorning them for what I imagine is about 20 years.
We'll see.
Here they are before (not the section I am experimenting on - that's up in the back right corner, out of the picuture and will potentially be covered with a unit - and if it all goes wrong, will definitely be covered with a unit):
As you can see in the above picture, the tiles are red - and I believe, based on pictures I've seen from another flat in the block, are possibly the original flooring tiles that went in when it was built in the 50s. But I'm no expert - it could be coincidence that another of the flats also has these - they may not be in keeping with a 50s new build at all.
You will also be able to see that despite being red, they are more accurately grey with white splotches. They have previously had larger tiles covering them - the lines of which are very clear in life - but maybe not in the picture. At some point, those were removed and replaced with lino - which has also contributed to the glue coating.
And now my alarm is going off. Time to either remove the stripper or add another coat...
